With all of the interest in the tragic death of the young actor, Heath Ledger, I thought that instead of uploading a photograph to satisfy only the morbidly curious, I could find a photograph I had taken years ago that would show the neighborhood in which the actor enjoyed living. This is Broome Street on which the actor lived. This area is on the edge of Little Italy and SoHo.

Venice (Italian: Venezia, Venetian: Venezsia, Latin: Venetiae) is a city in northern Italy, the capital of region Veneto, and has a population of 271,251 (census estimate January 1, 2004). Together with Padua, the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area (population 1,600,000). Venice has been known as the "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light". The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 62,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazione of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon.

The beginning of the Alta Via 1 in the Dolomite Mountains of Italy. Emi and I spent 12 days hiking south through the mountains from here. The trail begins at the wonderful hotel from which this was taken, runs along the right hand side of the lake and up into the mountains to the left. We stayed every night at refuges that were operated by the Italian Alpine Club or were privately owned. They are pretty spartan, but definitely a step up from packing our own food and sleeping in a tent.

Garden of Villa Rufolo - Ravello (Italy) Thanks for your comments! :-)) Villa Rufolo: a group of buildings in Arabesque style built by the noble family Rufolo to symbolize their wealth. Now it is site of the Antiquarium, a precious archeoloical museum which is unluckly closed. The public is admitted to visit the Moorish cloister, the tower, the famous esotic gardens (on my photo), whose beauty inspired the German composer Wagner for his Parsifal.

Two days ago I found a bunch of old photographs and amongst them this one from Italy. The setting sun gave a nice reddish tone to the rails and wires. Now I must find the pictures I took in the lagoon in Venice

The Castelli di Cannero are three rocky islets of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. They are located off the shoreline of Cannero Riviera while administratively forming part of the Commune of Cannobio. They are known as castelli, or castles, in recognition of the ruined ancient fortifications which are found on two of them. Recent plans to restore one of the castles, the Rocca Vitaliana, and make it a tourist attraction have been opposed by environmental groups.

allaccia molti dei centri della grecìa salentina, in previsione avrebbe dovuto congiungere leuca a taranto, comunque sarebbe stata utile ad avvicinare gran parte del basso salento all'aeroporto civile di galatina che nel 1976 decollò per un brevissimo periodo, atterrando presto tra il polverone di aspettative e promesse. si preferisce tenere una scuola di volo, la strada è rimasta deserta per gran parte del suo tempo, rinnovata periodicamente, costante teatro di scommesse tra centauri nel finesettimana, elemento di modernità datata al centro di un territorio che in gran parte conserva i caratteri di secoli addietro. alberi di olivo sembrano corpi rimasti immobili per sempre, circondati da pietre e solitudine.

This is apicture taken many years ago in Northern Italy. The original was Ektachrome, and it has been scanned. This picture is perhaps 30 years old. The lake is in Northern Italy in the Cortina area. Have a great Friday everyone. I would say this picture as been published at least 50 times. At the end of that lake, there are two Hotels there, I stayed there for a week, the sausage and polenta is wonderful in that area for some reason.

Although I worked a lot every day - getting up very early to take pictures and processing them at night - the atmosphere of Lake Como permeated me with a sense of wellbeing and peace and lifted me into a spacious consciousness that was truly inspiring. No wonder so many people speak highly of this lovely part of Italy. I'd go offseason, for sure, to benefit most.

I have taken artistic license and saturated a little bit to accentuate the FEELING that I had here. It was off season and so quietly beautiful. Lake Como is truly magical and peaceful, and the Villa Carlotta at Cadenabbia had expansive gardens to wander through and enjoy.
A very remarkable lake at the foot of the mighty Alps and a great place to stay is the little fishing village of Varenna, along the Eastern shore. In this photo you can see Bellagio across the lake.
